Monarch Gallery Artist - Margaret Eriksen

Mixed Media

Margaret Eriksen

I was born in England - a long, long time ago! I came to this country (for a year!) forty years ago, worked as a Nanny, then went back to school ( Marshall University ), where I received my AB degree in Art and Art Education, and my MA in painting. I became a U.S. Citizen, married, and had some marvelous (of course!) children! I taught Art at the Junior High and Middle School level, for most of my career, in the Columbus Public Schools. While at Wedgewood Middle School, my students and I produced several murals and made scenery for the Eighth grade musical every year. On retiring, in 2002, I did Volunteer work for Children’s Hospital and the Columbus Metropolitan Library, joined a book club, and traveled to a couple of places I’d always wanted to see (there’s still a lengthy list!).

I also joined the Canal Winchester Art Guild. A diverse group of nine of us has a studio in downtown Canal Winchester -"Studio 7.5."

Much of my work is done in Mixed Media. I love the interplay of the various materials. I use Watercolor Pencils and work a lot in Acrylics - sometimes in the usual, thick form, but often in a watered -down version which gives a similar effect to watercolor, but makes possible an almost unlimited build-up of glazes, which I really enjoy. Some of my painting is realistic, but often I work in the Abstract. I don’t feel that a line or shape has to be confined to the character of a recognizable object to have artistic expression.

Twice a year, I join about a dozen sculptors at a clay pipe factory in Logan, Ohio; where we create from the pipes produced in that facility. I sometimes supplement the clay with a fiberglass bonding material, then paint it with acrylics.

I have exhibited throughout Columbus, Canal Winchester, Granville, and Huntington, WV; and have work hanging in Arizona, Texas, England, and Lancaster ! I really enjoy retirement - how and where was there room in my life for a career? !
