Completed Workshops and Classes for 2006-2007

Fiber Artist Visits Monarch Gallery On Tuesday, September 25, a special group of guests visited Monarch Gallery, 158 W. Wheeling St. in Lancaster. They were from Kensington Place, the independent living section of Lutheran Village in Columbus. While visiting the gallery they were treated to a demonstration of hand spinning by Donnely K. Barber. Ms. Barber began by passing around samples of various fibers such as llama, alpaca, cashmere, bamboo, and others. The she began to spin on a beautiful wooden spinning wheel called a castle wheel, a type of wheel first developed in the 15th century. While spinning she explained such things as the gathering of cashmere, which comes from goats that are combed to collect loose fibers, not shorn like sheep. A cashmere goat will shed only about ˝ pound of fiber per year. So it can take quite a while to collect even 1 pound of cashmere fiber. She also explained that 1 pound of fiber, regardless of type, when spun very thin can make up to 20 miles of yarn. These and many other interesting facts were part of her discussion while she was spinning. The visitors from Columbus were then given time to browse in the art gallery before reboarding their bus for a tour of other sights in historic downtown Lancaster, Ohio. Monarch Gallery, an artists' cooperative gallery featuring original art, cards, jewelry, and gifts from local artists, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 11-4. For further information about the gallery or its classes and programs contact them at (740) 681=2787, or at www.monarchgallery.org. Donnely Barber can be reached at BlueRose Dragon Fiber Arts, 5905 Tent Chruch Road, Lancaster, phone (740) 994-0853. Donnely Barber demonstrates the art of hand spinning at Monarch Gallery.

Rock Mill Rally:

Have you heard about the Rock Mill Rally? On Saturday and Sunday, September 15 & 16, 2007 (noon-5PM) there is a rally fund raiser to restore the Rick Mill, a 183 year old grist mill located near the head waters of the Hocking River. Dave Fey, Director of the Fairfield County Historical Parks , and Lisa Schorr have discussed the possibility of having a “paint out day” there during the rally. Any artist would be welcome to come and sit in the area to paint, draw, or whatever. Bring your own art materials and supplies. There is the mill, a covered bridge, other barns, landscape, etc. They are expecting a large gathering throughout both days. We only ask that you do not sell any of your items there at the park at this time. You may pass out your business cards or information. In the future, they may have artists selling their artwork at another rally. Call Cheryl Steffy to sign up (740) 689-1575. Let her know if you plan to attend either or both days. There is no charge for you to come and make art during the rally. You may also contact Cheryl if you are interested in  being a volunteer for the parks. Once restored, Rock Mill will be one of the largest overshot water wheel operated grist mills ever built in America, and should bring tourists into Fairfield County.

1. Members offering classes at the gallery: Artist/member June Lee will continue to offer her drawing classes on all Tuesdays beginning on July 10.  For further information please contact June at (740) 569-4594.

2. Pickering House continues to display our artwork, but they have backed down on purchasing any at this time even though they indicated that they were going to do so. It was a huge let down. The gallery needs to write a policy to handle similar situations, be choosy when and were we exhibit as a gallery, and have guidelines to handle these types of situations.

3. Monarch Gallery Banner: A new banner has been ordered. The weight was taken out of the old one, but it did not prevent the damage from happening, thus the need for a new banner. Also we are considering if we need to revise the banner lights or not.

4. Silent Auction: Donna Noice has been in contact with Kathy Ross, who wants to open a Children’s Museum in the old “Studio B” in downtown Lancaster. A fundraiser is planned for this museum, with a silent auction being held at the Country Club. It may be an opportunity for MG to participate. The artist would fix a modest price, then if the artwork sells, the artist would make any money over this price, the museum would get any money up to this price. More information will be forthcoming as it develops.

5.  New Members: Monarch Gallery welcomes our new member, Cheryl Champlain, who works in glass blowing. Welcome Cheryl! Also the Jury committee is looking at two more prospective members, one who is an oil painter and the other who works in photography and collage.

6. Members in Action: Last month it was reported that MG member Linda Thornton was in a show in Nelsonville. This month we are proud to announce that MG member Patty Sykes will be going to Las Vegas to teach two classes as part of the Creative Painting Convention to be held at the Riviera Hotel January27-February 1, 2008! Nice work if you can get it, Patty!!
